Several years afterward they removed to Clarke County, Ohio, where the father died. His mother was born in Giles County. Henry grew to manhood in his native county, and in the spring of 1854 came to Clinton County and bought the mill property with 300 acres of land. He had as partners his brother, Joseph E., and Cyrus Pence. His brother came to this county the year previous, and Mr. Pence came ten years before. This partnership continued three years, when Henry sold out his interest to the other two and purchased a farm east of where he now lives. He remained on this farm until 1870, when he bought his present farm. He still owns both farms. September 16, 1855, he was married to Mary C. Obituary
HENRY WILLIAMS STAFFORD was born in Clark county, Ohio, April 5, 1823. He died in his own home southeast of Mulberry, 10 Mar 1902 at 2 o'clock P.M. If he [had] lived until the 5th of next month he would have been seventy-nine years old. He was the 4th child [son] of Thomas and Catherine Williams Stafford. In his father's family there were fourteen children, seven sons and seven daughters all but three lived to be grown up.
There are but two of his father's family that survive him. His older brother Thomas now living at Sheidler, in Delaware county, is now 83 years of age. The sister [Lucinda], who is sixty-seven, is well known among us, being Mrs. Michael Snyder.
The deceased was an active and successful man in his prime, having accumulated quite an amount of property. For some years past he has largely been inactive, having become quite deaf and enfeebled in body.
He was united in marriage with Mary Caroline Allen, 16 Sep 1855. The happy union now broken by death has lasted forty-six years. Four children were born of this wedlock, all of whom are living and married.
The eldest son aged 46, John Thomas Stafford, lives in Young America. The daughter Victoria E. Potter, aged 44, lives near Bringhurst. The second son aged 42, Samuel Allen Stafford, lives at Manson. The youngest son, aged 35, Isaac Grant Stafford, now lives in Frankfort. There have been born eighteen grandchildren, fifteen of whom are now living. So, our departed brother leaves many sorrowing ones. There is the widow, four children and fifteen grandchildren.
HENRY W. STAFFORD joined the Methodist Episcopal church in Ohio while yet a youth and was happily converted. He lost his membership by moving to Indiana. He was among the first to unite with our church when it was formed in Mulberry, and has ever continued in the fellowship of the church. Though unable to hear the preaching, he was faithful in his place in the house of God when able to be there. His fatal illness came to him in partial paralysis [which] seemed progressive and kept gradually encroaching on his vitality and his mental powers until at last he became unconscious. His end was apparently painless and we are assured was peaceful. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor from the United Brethren Church at Jefferson on Thursday, March 10, 1902. The interment took place in Jefferson Cemetery."
