• Notes

  At age 16, Andrew left his father's farm and boarded with his half-brother Ben in the village and attended the Old Academy. Andrew is listed in the 1850 census of Plattsburgh, Clinton, NY in the household of Joseph Durkee who listed as a Soap and Candle Maker. 21 Dec 1853, he boarded a steamer in New York bound for California by way of the Isthmus of Panama. He worked the gold mines for 2 years and returned to Plattsburgh with enough money to buy a small farm. Upon marriage, he bought a 33 acre farm from Charles Perry and his father-in-law gave his daughter an adjoining 25 acres.
