  A genealogy by Ruth Stafford lists a Mary Squire as his only wife. More investigation is needed. Another source has a Hannah as his wife. A Roger Williams (Matilda's father?) and John Stafford, Edward's father, were original members of the Baptist church in Danby, VT. Hi Mike, I note that you have a Hannah Hitt as the wife of John Stafford. I was curious as to the evidence for this relationship. I have been studying John Stafford for a few years now and I cannot confirm any relation to the Hitt family. The Hitt name has cropped up in the last few years for this John and is now being regularly repeated and so I am wondering about the authority of your sources. I would like to know to dispel some of the confusion that has surrounded this person. I am thinking that this confusion for this originates with Emmons Weaver, a brother of William C. Weaver (both of McKean, PA and second cousins of my grandmother). William C. Weaver was an avid family historian and when he died in 1969, all of his papers went to his brother Emmons. Emmons was contacted by Frederic Luther Stafford in the 1970s regarding the family history of the McKean Staffords. Emmons wrote him regarding the following: "We are related to one branch of the Stafford family. They came from Peru, N.Y. The ones who came here [McKean, Pa.] that we are sure of are John Stafford and his wife, who was a Hitt. They were my great-grandparents. I have heard my father speak of them many times. Their daughter, Lucy Delilah, married my grandfather Weaver. John Stafford built a house about a mile west of where I live. Besides my grandmother Lucy there were other childen: Hiram, who was born in New York State; John, Jr., Truelove and, I believe, Phoebe. There were others I think but their names have slipped my memory. My great-great-grandfather Stafford was in the Revolution, also in the War of 1812. My great-grandfather was in the War of 1812 also." Now Emmons did not have the interest in the family history that his brother did, but in response to Frederic's queries, Emmons did look at his brother's papers and relayed what information that he could. Unfortunately, the information that he related pertained to the wrong John Stafford. The John Stafford that Emmons Weaver was talking about was the John Stafford (1785-1863) who came to McKean in about 1845 and is well-known to have married Eleanor Hilliker. Emmons brother, William, knew that since the 1920s and others did too. In fact, the state death record of Lucy Delilah [Stafford] Weaver (their own grandmother) bears that out. Now I see that the Hitt name has become attached to John Stafford (1749-1798) who was the son of Thomas and Mercy [Cleveland] Stafford. I do not know where that comes from and I must offer that this marriage information is also incorrect. I believe that one of the many John Staffords did marry a Hitt... it just wasn't one of these. I believe that this particular John Stafford was first married to Hannah Irish and secondly to her widowed sister Martha [Irish] Griffith, they being his only two wives. One often sees Mary Squire(s) listed as the wife of John Stafford (this from the Ruth Stafford Genealogy). I have also been unable to confirm this and I now believe that the Squire(s) marriage information is also incorrect.
