- Early RI records appear to be spelled "Stukeley". Guilford birth record is spelled "Studely" but other Guilford records use both "Stukeley", and "Stutely". His pension file uses "Stutley", his deeds use every variation imaginable, and his will and his gravestone are spelled "Stutely". Since he, himself, could neither read or write, evidently each record-maker selected the spelling that suited the sound as he heard it. (Ltr Joan Hicks)
