Husband of Leola Lawrence Stafford.
Nathan served as a Fireman First Class, USS Eagle Boat 56 (PE-56), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Essex County, New York prior to the war.
Nathan was declared "Missing In Action" when the Eagle was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat U-853 off the coast of Portland, Maine during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Only 13 of the 67 crew members of the Eagle survived. The loss was classified as a boiler explosion until 2001 when historical evidence convinced the US Navy to reclassify the sinking as a combat loss due to enemy action.
