- One of the Original Charter members of First Congregational Church of Portland NY, in Chautaugua Co.
Military: John House enlisted in Capt Henry Kuster's Company, 3rd Battalion, Lancaster
County, PA, Militia.
Residence: He was the original purchaser of this Lot in a Deed issued by the Holland Land
Co. In 1925 the original deed was in possession of his Great-Granddaughter Cora
E. House.
Burial: His grave is in the ninth row of Lot #50. the land for this Cemetery was
donated by him and Thomas thompson and Daniel M. Farrington.
General
(1): John House moved from the State of Rhode Island to Cortland county , NY in the
early 1800's and in 1816 he purchased 100 acres in Chautauqua County from the
Holland Land Company and another 100 acres from an other source. John served in
the Continental Army through the Revolution, being in the transportation
Department. He married Joanna Prudden , who was the daughter of Col Prudden a
Rev. War hero. They had 8 children 3 sons and 5 daughters.
Land Records: Feb 1819 Township 4 Range 14, Lot 29. John House was the
original purchaser. In 1925 the original deed issued,by the Holland Land
Company, was in the possession of his Great Grandaughter Cora E. House, who at
that time resided upon a part of the original purchase.
Origin and early History of the First Congregational Church of Portland New
York. 1810
In 1810 the first preaching service in Portland was held in the tavern of CAPT.
JAMES DUNN on the well known DUNN farm, afterward owned by JOHN DUDLEY and
now by Carl RYON, This farm is just east of the cemetery. The Preacher, the
Rev John SPENCER, discovered from the text " For my yoke is easy and my burden
is light" His audience was very small, not numbering more than 6 persons
besides the DUNN family. Rev. Spencer and other travelling ministers continued
to hold occasional preaching services in this settlement known as CENTERVILLE.
Now PORTLAND [ Chautauqua Co.], until in 1814 regular services were conducted
by Mr. Amassa WEST, a teacher at the ancient Crossroads, Now Westfield, NY,
On January 31 1818, at the log house of JOHN CHURCHILL, [lot #38 T 5]
Rev John Spencer organized the First Congregational Church of Portland which was
the first organized church in the Township.
