- A widow.
Hi Everyone;
Thought I'd bring some of our other Ruttan researchers up-to-date, on
what Brant & I have been discussing.
Hope you don't mind, Brant. Please bear with me, with the length of my
notes; - I tend to go on at length, as some of you may have noticed!

[MY REVISED CONCLUSION]
Today, I was cleaning up my email inbox, and re-reading Harryette
Foss's reply to my thank you note for the paper-work she sent by snail-mail.
She asked me if I'd noticed the Malcolm family after the Hazzard family in
the 1871 census for East Peterborough, Dist. 57, Sub-Dist. D, Township of
Asphodel, Page 31. When I checked, there was Margaret Malcolm, ae 32, b.
Ireland, origin Irish, profession Seamstress, Widow; William John, ae 12,
b. Ontario, origin Scottish; Sarah Jane, ae 10, b. Ontario, origin Scottish.
There may be more children on the following page; Harryette only sent me a
copy of #31. I think Henry may have been mis-informed in this area. On
page 49 he says Christy is found in the 1881 census with "his second wife
and her children by her first husband." Earlier he had said, "Christopher's
[Christy's] second marriage was to Sarah Malcolm, born in 1831. She had
been widowed previously."
I believe that Christy married Margaret sometime between 1873, (1st wife
Phoebe dies) and c1878 when John A. Ruttan is born. So my theory of a 3rd
wife is now altered, to changing his 2nd wife's name, from Sarah to
Margaret. It wouldn't make sense for a 55 or 56 year-old man to marry a 16
year-old girl. He would have been more inclined to marry a mature woman of
35 or 36 years; - which Margaret was in the mid-'70s. Besides, she is
listed as his wife in the 1891 census.
So now we're looking for a death notice of a Scot, named ? Malcolm, and
a marriage between Christopher/Christy Ruttan and Margaret Malcolm, all
during the mid 1870's, probably in Peterborough Co., either in Belmont or
Asphodel Townships. I've taken a preliminary look in the Ontario Register,
searching for James, John, William or Peter Malcolm. I've found some
Malcolm carpenters in Hamilton and Toronto, but no one in Peterborough.
The 1861 census for Peterborough, Asphodel/Belmont townships should
confirm the husband's name.
