- The Abraham Wodell (the modern spelling is Wordell) who married Zilpha Stafford was the son of Gershom4 (Gershom4-2, William1) Wordell of Tiverton and his first wife, Hulda Fox. Abraham's grandfather was representative from Tiverton to the Massachusetts General Court (at that time Tiverton was still in MA) and was impeached three times from that office, which is probably still a record. The root of the problem was Tiverton's refusal to support a Puritan/Congregationalist minister with taxpayer money, a directive which the Quakers and Baptists of Tiverton, and other places, found offensive. Gershom3 inherited the independent streak of his grandfather, William1, who was a follower of Anne Hutchinson and banished from Boston, then became a follower of Samuel Gorton and narrowly escaped the death penalty in those adventures, then finally defied his Quaker brethren by marrying his former daughter-in-law.
