- In 1871, Mr Stafford and George W. Barnes built a steam saw mill a short distance northwest of the Auburn Center. In 1873, he bought Mr. Barnes' interest but in 1874 the mill burned to the ground. He soon put up another mill, and since attached an extensive cheese-box factory, known as the "Auburn Box Works", together with planners, matchers, and a mill for grinding feed for horses and cattle. Mr. Stafford has held the office of township treasurer several years in succession.
