• Notes

  Mr. Stafford came to Auburn, OH about 1835. He first purchase a farm one mile north of Browns Corners, on the Root tract. His first wife died in 1849. He remarried some years later, sold the farm to his son Clinton, and purchased a small farm on the diagonal road to Chagrin Falls. This bio is from pages to a geneology report I found in my parents things.  It appears to have been done by a descendent of Verna Stafford.   Joshua Stafford was born in Newport County, Rhode Island on June 28, 1799.  We was the oldest of nine children. When he was young, his family moved from Rhode Island to New York, living in Ressselaer County, then Lebanon Springs in Columbia County where four of his siblings were born, and finally Ontario County, where his parents bought a 130 acre farm.  In addition to farming, the family also worked on the Erie Canal and helped build the aqueduct at Lockport.  For a while, they went into "burning coal" (the manufacture of coke) but failed.  Joshua was instrumental in saving the family farm. About 1820, while still in Ontario county, he married Lucretia Gibson.  Several of their children were born there. Joshua and his family moved to Auburn Township, Geauga County, Ohio about 1835.  He purchased a farm one mile north of Brown's corners in the western part of the township, where he cleared the land, and build a large frame house. Joshua and Lucretia had nine children. Joshua lost his wife in June of 1849; he married again in 1860 to Esther Reeder. He then sold his homestead to his son, Clinton, and purchased a small farm on the diagonal road to Chagrin Falls, where he lived until his death on January 26, 1876.  He is buried in Maple Shade Cemetery in Auburn, as is his first wife, Lucretia. Census: Listed as a farmer with daughters Catherine (probable), Harriet, Fanny, & Ellen and son George, A., Also listed is Philo Stafford a first cousin and H. or A. Stafford age 38 b. OH. Listed as a farmer with wife Esther. Died: Died of gastric fever.
