- George Franklin Stafford enlisted in the Confederate States Army March 16, 1862. He was a resident of Holly Springs, Mississippi. He enlisted just nine months before the raid on Holly Springs. He was enlisted as private in company D of the 17th Mississippi Infantry. His regiment was in many important engagements during the war. He was captured and taken to a prisoner of war camp at Camp Chase Ohio. He was imprisoned for nine months before he was released. Upon his release, he began the long walk home ( he walked all the way home to Holly Springs , Mississippi). This taken from an email from Teresa Penny dated 12/27/2001.
