  A Quaker. Received into membership at the Whitewater Meeting, IN. The book "Proud Mahaska" by Semira A. Philips, pub. 1900, pg. 93, Quakers met at the house of Thomas Stafford in 1844 and organized into a "Meeting". Meetings or silent worship lasted one hour. Thomas Stafford was a rich man of the neighborhood. Rumored to have received $18,000 cash for his farm in Tippecanoe Co., IN, he came to the "new purchase" in 1843. Thomas and his wife were elderly then. Nine children grown and married, but two, William and Elam. Census: Misindexed as Thamus Stafford, a farmer, with wife Elizabeth. Also listed is Jane Rider age 13 b. IA and John E. Maha age 13 b. NC. Listed as Tho. Stafford, a farmer, with wife Elizabeth, daughter Celia McLean and grandson Brantley McLean.
