• Notes

  One of the earliest settlers of Henry Co., IN, coming in 1818 after his marriage. He settled near what is today, Greensboro and was a charter member of the Duck Creek Friends Meeting. His wife and sister rode on a one-horse cart loaded with their household goods, while the husbands walked. Eli first work a lease to clear land in Wayne Co. IN. After two years he sold the lease and improvements for $100 and bought 80 acres in Greenboro Twp. About 1843, he built a mill on his place of 40 acres. This was the first enterprise of this type in the area. He purchased another 80 acres where they lived until he died. The Quaker hat he wore is on display in the Henry Co. Historical Society in New Castle. (From 1902 Biographical memoirs of Henry Co. pgs 382-283) Census: Listed as a farmer with wife Elizabeth and children Abigal, Seth, Elizabeth and Sarah.
