- Description: Oskaloosa, Iowa newspaper clipping of William Stafford's obit. (no date or newspaper given)
"Stafford - Died, at 4 o'clock P. M., Friday, June 27, 1902, from a complication of diseases, WILLIAM STAFFORD, ages 79 years, 3 months an 15 days. Funeral Sunday, June 29, at 2:30 P. M., from the late residence, 811 South Mrket street. Interment in Forest cemetery.
William Stafford was born in Lafayette, Indiana, March 12, 1823, his parents being Thomas and Elizabeth Stafford, who with their family of six sons and three daughters came to Iowa and Mahaska county about 1838 and founded their home in the then wild west. The land entered by this family is now known as the Bryson farm - about 2 1/2 miles southeast of Oskaloosa - and the original home, a log house, still stands where it was bult. But one of that family now remains, Uncle Henry Stafford, of 116 Second avenue west. Wm Stafford was married in 1845 to Eliza Stanley, who departed this life in 1852. To this union four children were born, three of whom survive the father - John M., of this city, H Bryon, of Kansas City, and Mrs. John Whitacre of Texas. In 1855 Mr. Stafford married Amanda McClure and to them were born two children - James W. and Mrs. Belle Higgason, both of this county. Mrs. Amanda Stafford died in 1872. William Stafford was a prominent and useful citizen, stro ng in his likes and dislikes, honest and charitable to the extremes, positive and determined in his ideas of right and wrong. A greater share of his life was spent upon the farm, though for several years during the 60's and 70's he was successfully engaged in the mercantile business in this city. While he ever and always took great interest in all public matters as well as in politics, he was never an office holder and several times declined nomination for place when urged by his friens. One by one the sturdy early pioneers of Iowa are passing."
