- William Edgar STAFFORD and wife, Lydia BASSETT --
the information I have found on the internet indicates they had three children: James Harrison, Seth Newton, and Jesse S. However, looking at the early census for Monongalia Co., VA (1810, 1820, 1830, 1840) it appears that William Edgar had at least six children, all sons, born between 1815 and the late 1820s. The 1850 census for Monongalia Co. shows William Edgar and wife, Lydia, in the household of Nathan J. Stafford, age 20. This household is sandwiched between William's sons Seth Newton and James Harrison, so it appears more than likely that Nathan is another son. (Source: Year: 1850; Census Place: Eastern District, Monongalia, Virginia; Roll: M432_961; Page: 290; Image: 199)
Can anyone verify that Nathan was a son of Wm. Edgar? Or provide information on any other children?
Further, I have seen a specific dob for Seth Newton as 15 Apr 1820, but don't know the source of that date. His census ages are varied, and the censuses for 1850, 1870, and 1880 would have him born 1817, 1822, or 1823 (I have not been able to find him yet in the 1860 census, presumably in Iowa). Does anyone have the source of the 1820 birth date? Any clues about where he is in the 1860 Census?
My great-grandmother was Mary Ellen Stafford (b. 10 Nov 1852 in Monongalia Co., VA/WV, d. 21 Dec 1931 in Morgantown, Monongalia Co., WV) She was the daughter of William Stafford (b. abt 1824 in Monongalia Co., VA/WV, d. abt. 1855 in Monongalia Co., VA/WV), who I am fairly sure was the son of William Stafford and Mary Walker, and her mother was Maria/Mariah Irwin/Irvine/Erwin. Also interesting is that one of her daughters, Arizona Johnson, married Charles Hennen, who appears to be the son of James HENNEN and Mary Ann STAFFORD.
Thanks!
