• Notes

  I have not been able to determine if James was married. A James Stafford appears in the 1840 Census, Monongalia Co., VA, Eastern, whose age is between 20 and 30. That James has one son under 5, two daughters und er 5, one daughter between 5 and 10, and a female/wife between 20 and 3 0. In the 1850 Census, James was 53, and his mother, Jane Stevenson Stafford, was living with him. Also in the household is James A. Downey, age 14, born in VA. In the 1870 Census, James was 73 and living with his brother, Thomas J. Stafford in Union District, Monongalia Co., WV (page 20).
