• Notes

  Thomas became the Archbishop of Canterbury and primate of England during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI. Soon after Edward VI"s death and the accession of "Bloody Mary" to the throne, Cranmer was first sent to the Tower of London and later burned at the stake as a heretic. Upon his death, Cranmer's entire estate was seized by the Crown and his wife Margaret was ignored as a scandal to the Church. After Queen Mary's death, Queen Elizabeth granted the Archbishop's widow, the rents and profits from the property that she would have inherited.
