• Notes

  Charles was treated as an illegitimate child and was sent to St. Mary's Boys Orphan Asylum, with occasional "visits" to the family. He regarded St. Mary's as a horrible place, left the Church and became Protestant. He related to his son, stories of riding the rails as a hobo, playing baseball with the Buffalo Bisons, owning a bar and restaurant in Santa Barbara, CA. He was cook by trade and later a welder and tow-motor operator at General Motors. BAPM: Witnesses were listed as LOuise Steimer (sister) and Clara Steimer (maiden name only). No mention of father being present. Census: Listed as Charles A. Stafford, a boarder, at St. Mary's Boy's Orphan Asylum. Died: Died of liver failure.
