Obituary:
- MRS. MARY J. STAFFORD SUCCUMBED TO STROKE OF APOPLEXY.
Born Near Jefferson in 1838. She Spent Her Entire Life in This County--Four Sons Survive--No Funeral Arrangements.
Mary J. Stafford, 82 years of age, a resident of Clinton county her entire life, passed away at the home of her son, Pence Stafford, 902 Delphi avenue, at 5:30 o'clock this morning. Word of her death came as a distinct shock to her many friends over the city and county for she had been in her usual good health until early this morning when she was stricken with apoplexy and died without ever regaining consciousness.
Deceased was born in this county, near Jefferson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abner C. Pence, July 31, 1838, and all her long and useful life had been spent within a few miles of her birth place. She grew to young womanhood in Washington township and on Mar 25 [1856], at the age of 16 years, united in marriage to Joseph E. Stafford. Following 18 years of happily wedded life this union was separated by the death of Mr. Stafford which occurred in the early part of 1874. To this union the following sons were born, all of them surviving their mother: ***GEORGE, Crescent City, Ill.; J. Willis and John C. [Joseph E.], of Jefferson, and Pence, of this city, at whose home her demise occurred. One sister of the deceased, Mrs. Martha A. Boyles, of Kimlore [Kilmore], also survives.
Awaiting word from the son [GEORGE] in Illinois, no arrangements for the funeral have been made other than that the interment will be in the Jefferson cemetery, near the place where she was born."
