  Mr. Stafford was educated in the schools of Plattsburg. May 13, 1861 he enlisted in Company B, 16th NY Regmt. of Infanty, part of the 2nd brigade and 5th Division and was in the following engagements: Fairfax Court House - Jul 17; Bull Run - 21 Jul 1861; West Point, VA - May 7; Gaines Mills - Jun 17; Crampton's Pass, Sep 14; Antietam, 17 Sep 1862; Mary's Heights - 3 & 4 May 1863. Honorably discharged 13 May 1863. 18 Dec 1863, he enlisted again, this time in Company K, 56th Regmt., MA Volunteer Infantry. He was with his company in the battle of the Wilderness - May 5-10 1864 and received wounds in the right knee and left shoulder. He was sent to the Judiciary Square Hospital at Philadelphia, where he remained until 5 Aug 1865, when he was discharged.. Census: 1880. Listed as a blacksmith with wife, 5 sons and 6 daughters.
