Obituary received from Janet Chastain from a newspaper clipping kept in the Family Bible and written by Hiram's son, E. Stafford:
"Hiram was born in Jessamine County, Ky., March 4, 1836 coming to Carroll County with his parents at the age of 2 years. The remainder of his life was spent in this county. On Sat., May 19, at 2:00 p.m. after funeral service by Rev. J.B. Yeager, who knew him well, he was laid to rest in the family burying ground. He being on that day, 80 years, 2 months, and 13 days old. Hiram served in the Confederate Army four years. He was in Company A, Fourth Kentucky Cavalry, going out with General Morgan. He was a brave and good soldier. He became a member of the Christian church early in manhood at Whites Run, where he retained his membership until his death. He was a true Christian, a kind husband and loving and devoted father. He leaves to mourn his loss, a daughter and two sons, one brother, Rev. J. Stafford and several grandchildren."

"Six of his former comrades in arms acted as pall-bearers--Hon Thos. J. McElrath, R.L. Bond R.F. Harrison, P.N. Demit, Wes Stafford and Joseph Arnold."
