William Stafford married Phoeby (Ward). William rode a big "yellow-belly" (sometimes called gold dust or copper-belly) horse to Tennessee from above Richmond, Virginia. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest rode colts from this horse in the Civil War. Forrest and his family visited
with the neighboring Staffords before the war broke out. William had a brother in Overton County, Tennessee where General Forrest and his family resided prior to going south to Bedford County, Tennessee. This is when the Forrrest and Stafford families split. William and John Ray (thought to be the son of Thomas Ray of Union County, South Carolina) built flat-boats in Weakley County, Tennessee. Their dry dock was on the South Fork of the Obion River at Capps Port and their business prospered from 1820 until 1840.

WILLIAM STAFFORD'S WILL: I William Stafford being of sound mind and torn in health do constitute the following my last will and testament (viz) 1st, I wish all my just debts paid as soon as possible and in order to do so I wish my landed estate to be divided North and South so as to included fifty acers of, of the Estate and same to be sold for that purpose. 2nd, I
wish the ballance of my landed estate together with all my other property of every kind to remain in the hands and belong to my beloved wife Pheby Stafford during her natural life or widowhood and at her death or marriage I wish my youngest sons Peter Glascer Stafford, James Nathan Stafford, George Boyd Stafford and William Pinkney stafford to have fifty dollars each more than the ballance of my heirs, and the ballance to be divided equally between all my children and lastly, I wish and request that my friend John Wertham White and my beloved wife Pheby to execute this my last will, that all my landed estate except the fifty acres, first naimed remain unsold until my youngest son Peter Glascer Stafford become twenty one years of age. In wittness my hand and seal this the 24th day of April 1854 for the want of rume I do subscribe my name, for the want of rume I have subscribed my name on the following page in and in presents of Wm. McBride Joshua H. Moore and Alfred Hoggard and do wish them to witness the same.
