  Regarding Mahlon John Stafford, he was born in Barr Township, Daviess County Indiana, USA, on 13 July 1849. The 1860 census shows Mahlon still living in Knox County Indiana at 10 years of age. At the young age of 17, in 1866 he marries his first wife, Nancy Emeline Wallace. Nancy was the daughter of Thompson Wesley Wallace and Elizabeth Anna Chapman. She was born 2 November 1848 in Veal Township, Daviess County, Indiana and died 12 February 1891 in Blair Township, Clay County, Illinois. Mahlon and Nancy had the following seven children: 1. Alford Thompson Stafford, born 8 September 1867, died 30 September 1867, only three weeks old. I can only assume he was born and died in Knox County, Indiana. 2. Elmira Elizabeth Stafford, born 12 August 1868 in Harrison Township, Knox County, Indiana. 3. East Emmaline Stafford (female), born circa 1870 (as indicated in the 1880 census). 4. Edert Clark Stafford, born 10 November 1870 in Harrison Township, Knox County, Indiana, died 22 March 1895 in Knox County, Indiana. 5. John Harvey Stafford, born 7 March 1874, died 11 October 1875, barely one and a half years old. 6. James Morton Stafford, born 20 November 1876 in Daviess County, Indiana and died 5 January 1958 in Daviess County, Indiana. 7. Stella Jane Stafford, born 4 September 1880 in Blair Township, Clay County, Illinois and died circa 1908 in Washington Township, Pike County, Indiana. 8. Ezera Schrader Stafford, born 12 November 1887 and died 13 August 1889, three months shy of two years old. The 1870 United States Federal Census for Harrison Township, Knox County Indiana page number 54, enumerated on the 1st day of July 1870, lists two Stafford families living in dwelling 411, listed as families 418 and 419. Family 418 is James M Stafford, a farmer born in North Carolina, age 66 and his wife Elizabeth, born in Indiana keeping house, age 60. The value of his real estate was listed at $2,055 and his personal estate was $1090. Family 419 is Mahlon Stafford age 21, a Blacksmith, whose personal estate was $200. His wife Elizabeth, born in Indiana, was 21 and she was also a house keeper. There was a female child named Elmira whose age was listed as one year old. Ten years later, the Mahlon Stafford family had left Indiana and moved to Clay County Illinois. The 1880 United States Federal Census for Blair Township, Clay County, Illinois, page no 15, Enumeration District Number 145, taken on the 11th of June 1880 Shows a Mr. M. J. Stafford age 31, his wife Nancy E. Stafford, age 32, and the following three children: Emaline, age 12; East, age 10 (both listed as daughters); and James, age 4 as their son. Almost exactly four years after the 1880 Census, Mahlon James Stafford was awarded patent number 299,868, Attachment for Plows. This patent indicates that Mahlon was a resident of Wheatland Indiana when he applied for the patent the 15th of March 1884. The major purpose of this invention was to be able plow land which would otherwise be impossible to break with the same plow without the attachment. This patent can be found in the back of this book. The 1900 United States Federal Census for Harrison Township, Knox County Indiana, District number 45, sheet number 18, was taken on the 15th of June 1900 by a Prentice M. Stafford. The record is fairly messy, with scribblings, cross outs, and renumbering. Household number 357, family number 368 lists Mahlon J. Stafford, a farmer, born July 1849, is now married to his second wife, Sara Stafford, born 1849 and has been married for eight years, since 1892. There is a Gertrude Cogswell listed as a stepdaughter, age 15 born October 1884. Family records show she and Mahlon were married in Clay County Illinois on 28 July 1892. Sarah F. McKnelly was born 2 February 1849 in Illinois to Thomas McKnelly and Rebecca E. Connely. She married a John B. Cogswell and received a civil war pension as his widow and for her child. Mahlon J. Stafford is listed as the child's guardian. The 1880 census shows John B. Cogswell as married to Sarah F. Cogswell, and having three children, Lewis W. Cogswell age 11, Thomas H. Cogswell age 9, and John W Cogswell age 4. Sarah was buried alongside her first husband, John B. Cogswell.
