It is possible that some of the land transactions in Hampshire County, West Virginia, naming Richard Stafford apply to this man instead of his father. About the same time he was buying land in Ohio, he was selling it in Virginia.
Richard was a veteran of the War of 1812.

Richard Stafford was here (Coshocton) at this time (1815) , coming from the South Branch of the Potomac, Virginia. He was a wagonmaker, and served as an early justice of the peace.
Guardianship papers for the heirs of Richard A. Stafford show their order of birth as James, Henry, Eliza, and Mary. Henry was born in 1814; Eliza in 1818. A Zanesville Newspaper notice in 1814 speaks of a local Stafford boy being struck by lightning and killed; this could be a reference to a fifth child of Richard.

In looking for descendants in the 1850 census, his children were not among those in Clark County, which descend from Thomas Stafford, born 1780 in Virginia, nor were his children among those in Miami County, who descend from John Stafford & Margaret Brunt of County Fermanagh, Ireland, and the Giles County Virginia bunch.
Richard Adams Stafford was the third son of Richard & Catherine Brobeker Stafford. He was born 31 Jul 1784 in Frederick County, Virginia, probably near Winchester, but was raised in Hampshire County, Virginia (Now Mineral County, West Virginia). He married Mary Ann Walker 23 May 1809 (or 15 June); marriage license filed in Allegany County, Maryland.
In 1810, he was still living in Hampshire County, VA, but shortly afterward moved to Coshocton (then Muskingum) County, Ohio, settling near his brother Francis Asbury Stafford Sr. He purchased land in what is now Washington Township, Coshocton County, Ohio, section 14. He served in the War of 1812, and was a wagon maker by trade.
He died in 1823, his will being entered into record by administrator John Crowley on 17 April 1823. His burial place is unknown.
Richard & Ann Stafford were the parents of at least five children:
James Madison Stafford (1810)
Henry Walker Stafford (1814-1863)
Eliza Stafford Wilkins (1818-1893)
Mary Stafford (c1820)
Guardianship of these four children was given to John McBride.
An additional son was killed by lightning in 1814.
