Notes |
Lemuel’s was a sad story. Sarah died the same year her lastchild died, possibly in childbirth or from some illness such as typhoid fever. Accordingto the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana, he enlisted inCompany F, Indiana 113th Infantry Regiment on 10 Jul 1863, and thenmustered out on 17 Jul 1863 – just 7 days later. He married Mary WISE at the end of the next year, and then died himself in 1865. He and Mary had one child,Kenneth (aka Kinneth) STAFFORD, born the year Lemuel died.
After their father’s death, Elizabeth and Watis turn up next in the 1870 census, living with Eli and Martha HELM at their farm, along with the Helm’s extended family. In the 1860 census, William WILLMORE (the children’s half-uncle) is listed as working as a laborer at the farm of Johnand Winnie HELM. Did William help place the children after they were orphaned? Or was that just a coincidence? In any event, Kenneth stayed with Mary WISE, while Watis and Elizabeth did not.
