- The 1850 census lists James as 47, which would indicate a birth date of 1803 and not 1810 which I have listed in my research. I am not sure how I arrived at the date of 1810 other than some form of family record for which at this time I cannot accurately account for. In 1850, the United States Federal Census, family number 416, listed a male, James M Stafford, as being age 47, born about 1803 in South Carolina, residing in District 61, Knox County, Indiana. His wife was Elizabeth Stafford Age 40. The following children were noted: Eliza, age 23; Nancy J, age 21; Eleanor, age 18; Felix A. age 7; and Mahlon, age 1. Given the proclivity of the Staffords to have large families, there was most likely some mortality that occurred between Felix and Eleanor and this could account for the spread in their ages.
Scouring various records, I found birth places for James M. Stafford to include North Carolina, South Carolina (1950 and 1900 Census) and England (other family trees on ancestry.com). At this time it is difficult if not impossible, to confirm the birthplace of James M. Stafford. (I am confident that his middle name is Mahlon, but to date have no proof to confirm my suspicions.) There seems to be the idea that James M. Stafford was a Senior, if so, where is the Junior? We all know his son Mahlon was the father of James Morton Stafford. Perhaps that is where the confusion comes into play. Mahlon James Stafford is his full and correct name. Some researchers have him listed as James Mahlon, but his marriage certificate to Nancy E. Wallace on 4 October 1866 in Knox County Indiana, lists him as Mahlon J. Stafford. I rest my case. Since there was a father and son each known by the name Mahlon, this situation most likely resulted in the idea of James M. Stafford being referred to as Senior as indicated in some genealogy research and Mahlon James Stafford was perhaps referred to as Junior.
Many of the children ended up in Southern Indiana.
