- James was a Deputy Sheriff of Anderson Co., TX. He arrested some gamblers and Ed Mathews, the city marshall, became angry claiming an encroachment of his territory. The morning after the arrests, Ed drove to the jail and called James out, saying --- "by G-- I want to know what you are doing meddling in my business". Ed Mathews then started cursing James, pulled out his pistol and shot James four times. This was June 1899. Ed was sent to prison where he spent several years. On his way home after his release, Ed was killed by a freight train. After Jim's death, Fannie went back to the farm and some time later married Alonzon Forrester.
