A. L. COMPTON wasborn in this township June 16, 1843, the son of Andrew a
nd Mary A. Compton, natives of New Jersey and Massachusetts. They ca
me to this township in the fall of 1837, and located in the forest on Sect
ion 21, which they have converted into a delightful home of 332 acres. T
he father died in 1852, aged forty-four years, and the mother is still liv
ing on the old homestead at the advancedage of seventy-five years. The
ir children were ten in number. Our subject was but nine years old at h
is father's death, and until a grown man he remainedwith his mother, goi
ng to school in winter and working on the farm in summer. In 1872, he marr
ied Ellen Griffith, the daughter of John and Margaret Griffith, and to the
ir union have been born one son and two daughters. He is a member of the M
asonic fraternity, and by industry and economy has secured for himself a t
idy and productive farm of 129 acres.
