Charles H. Brace received his education in schools of Cumberland and in the private tutelage of Rev. J.W. Nott. His studies were pursued with the view of following civil and mining engineering; at age 18, he projected and surveyed the suburban village of Mapleside and drew a map of Cumberland water mains.
In 1873, he entered the office of Dr. James A. Fechtig at Cumberland, remaining until September 1875. He matriculated at Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia, attending sessions 1875-1876, 1876-1877; received medical diploma 12 Mar 1877. He studied surgery, obstetrics, practical and surgical anatomy.
On 10 Apr 1877, he opened an office in Frostburg.
On 01 Dec 1879, he purchased the practice and good will of Dr. Fechtig a
nd moved to Cumberland. He was young, but successful in building a large practice.
By 1919, after forty years of practice in Cumberland, he was recognized as theoldest practitioner in the city and was highly regarded as a family doctor and a doctor of gynecology and children's medicine.
Charles and Edith's beautiful home in Cumberland, Maryland, was the center of Cumberland society and entertainment.
They had no children.

December 14, 1880, Dr. Charles Brace, 25, white, bachelor, physician, married Edith W. Dilley, 21, white, Allegany County.
Dr. Brace was born at Westernport on September 11, 1855, and is the son of William and Susan C. Stafford Brace.
