- Cumpton was first married to Elvira Ownsby, and they had two children, a daughter Allie Brook, and a son John William, who died as a toddler from "sore throat" which was probably diphtheria. It seems that Elvira must have died soon after their little son John died. There is some confusion over Elvira in the available records. In some of the Logan County annotated records, Elvira's maiden name is shown as Brewer. For example, there's a notation that Cumpton married: "Elvira Brewer-Stafford, daughter of Isaac Brewer & Eliz Meade" The Brewer maiden name and parents are in error. The annotators are mixing up Elvira Ownsby Stafford who married this Cumpton Stafford and Eliza Brewer Stafford who married Cumpton's uncle Cumpton Stafford. The older Cumpton Stafford moved from Pike County, KY, to Breeden, Logan County, WV, about the time the younger Cumpton and Elvira Ownsby were married. It is easy to get mixed up with so many same or similar names.
Cump's wife Mary Ann was first married to Floyd Jackson Cooke, older brother of Anthony Cooke, Cumpton's sister Mary's husband. Floyd Cooke "died of brain fever." When Cumpton married Mary Ann, she had six children ages 1 to 16, he had his two-year-old daughter Allie Brook, then they had three more children. The children were born in Wyoming Co, WV. For some reason, the family was living in Mercer Co, WV, in 1900, in Plymouth Dist, pg 146B, family #210.
