  Buried: Justice Cemetery. On Sam and El's headstone - "Life's work well done They rest in peace" In 1967, cousins Sheila Flo Arnold (Lester) and her mother Tharon Hatfield Arnold interviewed Sam and El's daughter Mary. Mary said that after her parents were married, they acquired a 350 acre tract of land bordering the Guyandotte River, near the town of Justice, WV, and Sam's brother John Wesley Stafford built a two room log house on the property. Mary goes on to tell how the house was added to as the children were born. Sam farmed the land during the summer and rafted logs down the Guyandotte River during the winter to Huntington. They also kept boarders. She tells of living off the land, and how much things had changed during her lifetime. Sam's name was written as Samuel Pierce in his birth record in his mother's Bible, but as early as the 1860 and 1870 census records, when he was 9 and 19, he is listed as James S. P. Stafford. He usually went by the name of JSP or James Samuel Perry Stafford. As the Gilbert book says, "his names are almost as varied as were his talents and accomplishments." Samuel P. Stafford, the son of John and Levisa Spratt Stafford was born in Logan County (before Mingo County was formed) on January 25, 1851. On January 18, 1878, he was united in marriage to Margaret Spratt, who was born near Liberty, Tazewell Co. Va. on October 11, 1858. Immediately following the wedding, the young couple acquired a 350 acre tract of land bordering the Guyandotte River, near the town of Justice, WV. John Wesley Stafford, a brother, built two room log house on the property purchased for one thousand dollars. This included the surface and mineral and timber rights. -his daughter Mary, in 1967. Mary tell how the house was added to as the children were born.. Eva L. born November 30 , 1878, Levisa J. born October 4,1880, Ida Z. born August 5, 1884, Suda E. born November 9, 1886, Essa Pearl born June 20, 1888. The total number of room soon reached ten with a full-length hall and a long, rambling porch the entire length of the house. Carl, Sam, Mabel and I [Mary] were to become member of the household during the immediate years that followed. That bought the total members of our family to nine [seven girls and two boys]. The Stafford home still stands at Justice. I had the privilege of taking my grandparents Kenny and Susie Browning to visit his cousins who still lived there at the time. I have since gone back to show my son Jason the old homestead.
