  Her nephew John Edward Stafford had her listed as Cosby Stafford Elkins on his family tree. When Martha Cosby married Uriah Elkins in 1866, he was a widower with 5 young girls, ages 4 to 13. One of those daughters, Zilphia, is quoted as saying that her stepmother was very good to them and she made no difference in her own children and them. Besides those five girls and six of her own children, Martha took three little grandsons to raise when their mother died within a month after childbirth, the sons of James and Lydia Elkins Buchanan.
