• Notes

  All the children were born on their parent's plantation known as the "Hermitage". "When the Civil War began, William John Stafford was the father of six children. He entered the Confederate Army and served during the greater portion of the war. He returned home to find everything swept away. His plantation had been in the path of General Sherman's march from Savannah to Charleston. It was so devastated that in spite of his energy and perseverance, William John could not provide for his large family. In 1868, he sold what he could and moved his family to the vicinity of Kansas City, Missouri, where his wife's people had gone some years previously. He settle on a farm south of that place and died the following year.
