Corres.:
"My husband is Jim Burris. He is the grandson of Augustus (Gus) Adolphus Burris born on March 10, 1879 in Stockdale, Wilson Co. Texas. Gus is the son of J.B. Burris & Ava Mills.
On Oct. 28, 1896 he married Mary Frances Stafford who was born on April 15, 1882 in Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas. Mary was the daughter of William Sumpter Stafford & Mary Catherine Broadway.
Gus died on June 18, 1961. Both Gus & Mary are buried in Stockdale. They lived many years near Sequin, where Gus had a blacksmith’s shop, and he traveled as an implement salesman.
Gus and Mary had 13 children, one of them was Luther E. Burris who was my husband's dad. My husband lived with his grandparents, Gus & Mary for a short time.
Grandma Mary was the grand-daughter of William Arch (probably Archibald) Stafford who was born about 1826 in Alabama and belonged to the Coushatta Indian Tribe. There is a group of the Alabama-Coushatta Indians located in Texas on a reservation 17 miles east of Livingston, Texas. There is a picture of William in full dress of a chief in the possession of one of the great grandchildren, but has not been located.
William Arch Stafford was in the Marines in the Civil War and was stationed in Galveston, Texas. He is buried in Calvert, Texas.
William married Mary Emerson, who was also born in Alabama. They had 4 children. Mary Emerson Stafford died in 1865 and is buried in Montgomery County, Alabama. After Mary’s death, William (called Billy) remarried and moved to West Texas.
We obtained this information from Jim's Aunt Dorthey Catherine Burris-Sells. As of June 19, 2011, she is the only surviving child from the 13 children of Mary Francis Stafford and Gus Adolphus Burris. She is 90 years old and lives in San Antonio, Texas.
