A "Nathaniel and Balaane Stafford" are listed in the 1800 census for Caroline County, MD. It is noted that Nathaniel Stafford, son of John Stafford III, had brothers named John, James and Balaam.

On July 1803, recorded 23 July 1805, William Swiggett of Caroline County to Nathaniel Stafford of the same place, for L(pounds) 9, 4 acres (being) part of "Lloyds Care". Acknowledged by William Swiggett and Sarah, his wife, before Fred. Holbrook, John Young (This deed was directed to be recorded and recognized by order of A. Hanson, Chancellor of Maryland, as if it had been done within the time prescribed by law -- in the case of Jenny(Jensey), Ebenezer and Sarah Syafford their mother and next friend vs Wm. Swiggett. This land record was not recorded until 23 july 1805.
