A BOLD ROBBERY
Stafford Bros. Tobacco Factory Entered and a Large Amount of Tobacco Stole n
The tobacco factory of Messrs. E. J. and A. J. Stafford was entered Friday night and a large quantity of manufactured tobacco stolen. The exact quantity of tobacco taken has not yet been ascertained. It may be as mu ch as 160 boxes or it may be less.
The entrance to the factory was effected through a basement window at t he west end of the building and the only window in the basement which is n ot protected by iron bars. The window frame was cut and two panes of gla ss removed. Entering the basement the thieves went to the first floor a nd opened a door in the rear of the building. A large quantity of plug to bacco, boxed and ready for stamping, is piled up on the first floor, and f rom these piles the robbers loaded a wagon which had been driven to the re ar door, the wagon tracks being plainly visible when the theft was discove red. The robbery was discovered Saturday morning by Mr. E. J. Stafford mi ssing some tobacco and finding where the basement had been entered. The t hieves had closed the door when they left.
A lady who lives opposite the factory heard a wagon drive up there Satur day morning about 2 o'clock and remain for some time. Beyond this the cl ue to the robbers is slight and no arrests have yet been made.
If as much tobacco was taken as is thought the loss is heavy...amounti ng to probably between $600 and $800.
(Later investigation shows that the loss amounts to about 102 boxes).
