- His death certificate states he was born 9/20/1843 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His father's name was listed as William Stafford. His mother's maiden name was listed as Thornburg. Even though the death certificate says he was born in South Carolina, I believe he was born in North Carolina and the family moved to that state closer to the end of the 1840's. He stated he was born in Randolph Co., NC in his application for a Civil War pension. His application was accepted and he received a pension until he died. His widow reapplied and received his pension until she died. William enlisted in Caldwell Co., NC.. in the Confederate Army 26th NC.. Co. I. in 1862. He served under Z. B. Vance, Col., H. R. Benjamin, Lt. Col, Sidney Dooley, Capt. He transferred to the 58th NC Reg. Co. H. and served under Capt. Geo. Harper and Col. Silver. He was wounded in the shoulder in the battle in Southfield, NC.. He called his wound a flesh wound and was incapacitated for 1 month. He later suffered "pneumonia fever" and spent 6 weeks in the hospital at Jonesboro, Ga. He served in the Confederate Army until he was paroled at Greensboro, NC at the surrender. He came to Tennesse in 1868.
