Nancy Rohrbough Thompson, a resident of Woodbury and West Deptford for 45 years, passed away on July 21, 2017, in Fair Oaks, CA. She was 86 years old and lived a vibrant life that was unfortunately compromised by dementia in her late years.
Nancy is predeceased by her husband, William D. Thompson, former CEO and President of Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, who died in August 2004 shortly after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family on Mackinac Island in Michigan.
Nancy was born in 1931and raised in Grafton, West Virginia, the daughter of Mildred Stafford Rohrbough and Ralph Virgil Rohrbough, a former State Superintendent of Schools in West Virginia. She was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority at West Virginia University, and graduated in 1953 with a B.S. in Physical Education. She was a Physical Education teacher for several years at Atlantic City High School.
In 1952, she represented her state as Miss West Virginia in the Miss America pageant In Atlantic City. It was an honor that delighted her children and grandchildren but one that Nancy always seemed reluctant to acknowledge.
Nancy was involved in Gloucester County community and civic volunteerism throughout her life. She especially enjoyed her time as a stroke and turn judge at Wenonah Swim Club, a member of Underwood Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, a faithful congregant of Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church, a volunteer caregiver for Hospice, and a member of the Board of Directors of SODAT.
Her passions centered around spending as much time as possible with family and close friends, laughing over "true stories," and traveling with Bill and her kids. Her highlight every year was the Stafford Family Reunion, which started in 1966 with 22 family and now numbers more than 75. Nancy celebrated all things West Virginia, from singing "Country Roads" to driving those roads aggressively in order to silence her "rambunctious" young kids in route to family gatherings. She was a diehard Mountaineer football fan and Philadelphia Eagles season ticketholder no matter the weather conditions, and a dedicated patron of arts and music in Philadelphia. She loved to garden, restore antique furniture, and enjoyed many meals at Riverwinds Restaurant where she could peacefully watch the river and incoming planes.
Nancy is survived by four children: David (and Kara) of West Deptford, NJ, Keith (and wife Michele) of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Beth Foy (and husband Jon) of Fair Oaks, CA, and Amy Weyrich (and husband Andy) of Salt Lake City, UT. She thoroughly enjoyed the company of 12 grandchildren: Bryan, Chad, Kyle, and Connor Thompson, Mackenzie, Jack, and Riley Foy; Sarah and Sammy Weyrich; and Kirstin, Zoe, and Bailey Shannon.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, September 2, 2017, from 11 am-12 noon with a Memorial Service to follow at 12 noon, at Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church - 19 S. Broad St., Woodbury, NJ. Those who wish may make a donation in honor of Nancy to the of Greater NJ, or Kemble Memorial United Methodist Church.
