Wound Healed, He'll Return to Service
Another Fayette County soldier is "home from the war" - but this time only temporarily. He is James Robert Stafford, 24, wounded eight months ago in the invasion of New Georgia Island, in the Southwest Pacific. He has been hospitalized for several months and recently arrived home for a furlough before returning to active duty.
Pvt. Stafford was one of the early registrants to go from Fayette County after the Selective Service System was placed in operation. He was induced March 14, 1941, and has seen 13 months of foreign service.
On last July 25, when Allied forces were engaged in the New Georgia attack, a Japanese sniper fired a rifle bullet which entered Pvt. Stafford's right shoulder and ranged upward into his neck.
He received first aid immediately, and spent nearly five months in hospitals overseas, where, he reports, he received good treatment. He landed in the United States Jan.12.
Pvt. Stafford is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Stafford, Route 1, and has a brother, Pvt. Carthal R. Stafford, now stationed at Camp Phillip, Kansas.
