Notes |
May have been a professor or inventor, possibly involved with bicycles in some way. Name may be Francis or Augustus. Wife may be Mary Spone or May Spore.
The city of Fulton has no record of Eugene Francis Stafford. However, they DO have a record of an Ernest Francis Stafford born on June 11, 1900, to a Francis Stafford (27 years old, born in Palmyra) and a Mary (Spone) Stafford (27 years old, born in Baldwinsville). Given the similarities, this must be my grandfather, and I assume that the inconsistencies are the result of poor handwriting or defacement of the original documents (the one I have is a new copy from 2001). According to this document, the birth was not registered until October 1, 1914.
I also have my grandfather's death certificate, which contradicts some of the information given above. It gives his birthdate as June 11, 1904, lists his father as Augustus Stafford, and his mother as May Spore.
The only further information I have on my grandfather, Eugene/Ernest, is the following:
- He had an older sister named Ruth, who married a Bill Arnold of Fulton, NY.
- His father has been described as a tool maker, an inventor, and a maker of bicycles.
- He was married twice, the second time to my grandmother, Stefanie Karenewsky, and had two children, my father, Jon, and his sister Karen. I can find no information on his first marriage, but my father recalls a rumor that she may have committed suicide.
- He served in public relations in the radio industry, and worked for many years for NBC. This route has not proven fruitful as all of the people who might remember him are long dead.
- He died in 1969.
That is it. Unfortunately, all of the principles who might be able to assist me are dead, and my father is now so incapacitated that he cannot help. It is my hope that some of this information might be familiar to someone, and maybe they could help me fill in the blanks and connect Eugene (Ernest?) Stafford the the rest of the Stafford lineage.
