Note: Known as "Zettie" she was named for her mother's younger sister. She and Elmer were married the same day as her cousin and his business partner, George Stafford, and George's bride, Grace Holden. Each couple stood as best man and bride's maid for the other in separate weddings. I remember my grandmother as a dynamic woman who loved to cook and garden. She was very much in charge of her large household at Winterthur which for many years included her daughters, Hazel and Thelma, and their daughters. In the spring the farm men tilled her huge vegetable garden which she then planted, tended and harvested. In her letters to my mother she often spoke of harvesting and canning dozens of jars of produce, "and now it's 8 AM." I also recall one time when grandmother took me with her grocery shopping. She bought what seemed an incredible amount of food, then paid for it by reaching deep inside her bosom for a hundred dollar bill. I recall her driving with gusto one of the two Buick cars she and Elmer owned. She was a kind and generous woman whose speech was very direct and at times seemed brusque, but there was never any doubt about what she wanted from us kids or of her love for us. I also can recall seeing her lift her skirt and shuffle about the kitchen while telling of the dances Elmer used to enjoy when they were younger... After Elmer's death she lived with her daughter Hazel in Wilmington. She died after a lengthy illness at age 85. Her funeral and internment were at the Lower Brandwine Presbryterian Church where she had been a member since 1915. [SJS: 11 May 1999] 1
