- Ashley and I went to England in the year 2000 prior to her handbell tr ip to research more of the Stafford genealogy. While in Wakefield arch ives office reviewing marriage records, Ashley found the record of Hann ah Stafford being married by the Vicor Westmoreland to William Leak. T he record was found in the Sandal Magna church records and it was liste d as record #24 dated as 4/30/1848. William Leak is listed as a labore r in Pledwick (it does not reference what kind of laborer). The record s imply states that the two are "of age" to marry and does not tell the a ctual age of either Hannah or of William. Hannah is listed as living i n Newmillerdam, which would indicate that Charles Stafford, her father, m ust have taken up residence just down the street from the Inn that his f ather had owned. Having been there, it is a very short walk from Pledw ick Inn to Newmillerdam, about 8 to 10 minutes. William Leak's father i s listed on the record as Thomas Leak, a game keeper and Hannah's fathe r is listed as Charles Stafford, a mason by trade. The witness section o f the record also raises the curiosity. Thomas Leak, probably William' s father or brother signed as witness for William. When trying to read t he witness for Hannah, it appears to read (and it was difficult to dete rmine the writing) Kifray Stafford. I have noticed in most of the othe r records that a brother or sister most often signed as witness but, at t his point, we have no knowledge of a Kifray in the family or anyone lik e that if I have interperted the writing correctly. This leaves us wit h a big question on who Kifray is and how is he/she related (probably h e). There has been no other evidence found that indicates that Hannah e xisted, no birth/chrisening record. I am told by the archivists that m any times the official recorder was out of town or unable to record for v arious reasons from time to time. When this occured, they may try to c orrect the recording after the fact but, many times people and events m ight get missed so, it maybe that Hannah was baptised like the rest and i t just never got recorded. I have entered her birth into this family t ree record as an "about" timeframe. There were a number of open years a nd since she would have been about 20 years of age if she were born in t he middle of these childless years, I guessed at it at that point until I c an find a death record or some other date of birth. All of this inform ation can be seen on Wakefield film # D20 (1/3/7) of the Sandal Magna p arish and it is located on microfiche #1 of 5, page 12, record 24 as me ntioned above. Note of interest is that a record of marriage for a Mar garet Stafford shows Elizabeth Leak as the witness...Margaret is likely t o be Hannah's sister.
