  Father was possibly William Stafford. According to family legend: "Three brothers sailed from Glasgow, Scotland; landed in Viginia; moved west to Kentucky. One brother settled on the Big Sandy River. One brother went to Louisville (Thomas Moore Stafford ?). One settled on the Kentucky River at Frankfort. An extensive Biography can be found at: http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/FH21&CISOPTR=24543&REC=3 MILITARY RECORD: Thomas fought in the Civil War and served from the state of Kentucky. [Co. B, 2nd Kentucky Infantry, Union Records from National Archives] He was mustered in at Camp Clay, Ohio, for a period of three (3) years. His mustering in date was listed as June 3, 1861. The record shows that he was 19 when he joined and he enlisted as a Corporal, probably because he was a skilled laborer, a hamessmaker, which would have been a valuable occupation to the Army. A second Company Muster Roll record shows he was in Louisville and "joined for duty and enrolled" on 12 May 1861. " Kentucky was a border state and during the Civil War," according to Robbie Trafton, ".. .he (Thomas) fought on the Union side and at least one of his brothers (John) fought on the Confederate side. It seems it was as matter of which Recruiter got there first." Census: 17 Jul 1860. Listed as Thomas Stafford, a harness maker, in the household of Urban and Sarah Robinson. 19 Aug 1870. Listed as Thomas Stafford, a harness maker, with wife Fannie and daughter Lela b. May 1870. Listed as a saddler with wife, 4 sons and a daughter. Parents born in Ireland.
