- The 1870 census seems to mistakenly list him as Lela (F). No issue.
Uncle Lee was a trolley car superintendent for the city of Tampa. Manny Garcia, a Tampa attorney, told this story to Doug about his uncle. "Your Uncle Lee would stand down at the comer of Lafayette Street and Franklin Street in front of Tibbet's Comer and supervise trolleys." Manny said that Uncle Lee could flip a silver dollar in the air and it would balance on the trolley power line! Both the 1910 and the 1915 City Directories for the city of Tampa list: John L Stafford (Clara), inspr, h 607 607 E. Amelia Av
The thing Douglas remembers about his great-uncle Lee was his shock of thick, white hair. He smoked a pipe and would throw the wooden stick kitchen matches into the hedges bordering his front porch. "There must have been a stack of matches three to four inches deep, as I remember. Another thing I remember is that he burned coal in his fireplace. His wife, Aunt Clara, made her own bar soap, with lard and lye. Even from the time I was little, when we would go to visit him, he was always talking about Stafford history... .and I can't remember a dang piece of it!!!"
[Interview with Doug Stafford, great-grandson of Thomas Stafford.
