EX-Saginawian Air Crash Victim
Loren Stafford, 28, Among Seven Killed
A former Saginawian, Chief (MMM) Loren Stafford, 28, was among the seven Navy airmen killed Tuesday in a crash at the Norfolk, Va., Naval Air Station.
The accident occurred, according to Naval spokesmen, when a Corsair fighter plane and a patrol bomber carrying a crew of seven, including Stafford, collided in the air and crashed. The Corsair caught fire and its pilot was burned to death. The bomber crashed on its back in swampy ground 300 yards away. One crewman was extricated from the wreckage and was found to have suffered only lacerations.
Born and reared here, Stafford attended Arthur Hill High School and prior to enlisting in the Navy about 10 years ago worked at Saginaw Hardware Co. During the war he saw action at Kiska and in Alaska. His plane was based at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack there but he was on a routine mission when the attack was staged.
He leaves his wife, Olga (Boone); a two-year-old son, Gary Lee; a sister and four brothers, Mrs. Ira Malone of Burt, Calvin, Merritt and Kenneth Stafford of Saginaw and Darwin Stafford of Birch Run...
