The Raynor Family
My maternal grandmother, Sarah Eva Raynor, was born 30 Oct, 1859 in Henry Co, IA, the 2nd child of Amos & Louise (Chandler) Stafford. The family moved to a farm south of Red Oak, IA, Montgomery Co, in 1869. In the fall of 1875, the family moved to a farm south of New Market
23 April 1876 Grandmother married Thomas Parker Raynor, son of Henry Wm & Miriam Westenhaver Raynor. 10 children were born. (2 died young) Ida married Alonzo Weingarth, 2 children; Carl & Hazel. Vietta married Wm C Cunningham, 7 children; Velma, Roy, Viola, Bernice, Eldon, Helen, Ruby, Viola & Eldon died as infants. Ruby was burned to death when 7 yrs old. Effa married Irvin S Cunning, 6 children; Melvin, Franklin, Mildred, Atha, Arlo d. at b. & Ivan. Oakley died at 4. Neva married Benjamin J White, 4 boys, Alvin, Everett, Claire, Bernard. Leafa married Alex W Rhoades, 2nd Martin J Murphy, 3rd Leo Bye Williams, no children. Audrey married Forrest M Pershin, 6 children; Dale, Kenneth (died young), Lela, Leland, Elbert & Mack. Fern married Fred L Joslyn, 9 children; Paulyne, Thermal (died young), Clayt, Naomi, Wanda, Audrey, Boyd, Bonnie (died young) & Lewis. Fern 2nd marriage to Allie Pullen, 3rd to Edward Kenyon. Forest married Grace Maltsberger, 8 children; Lucille, Wayne, Doris, Donald, Darrel, June, Twilla & Paul (died young).
The spring on 1879 they moved to Rooks Co, KS. Lived in a sod house until they could build. Traded a team, harness & wagon for 160 acres. They lived in KS about 7 yrs before retuning to Taylor Co. Grandfather died 10 Sept 1899. Grandmother stayed on the farm south of New Market until all of the children were raised & then moved into town of New Market. It was at this period that I knew her. She called each of the children every morning to check on the family, early! She spent most of her days quilting. 5 cents a spool. She always had a nice garden & flowers. Anyone at her home on Sunday attended the Baptist Church with her.
It didn?t matter what meal you took with her, there was always vinegar pie on the table. With 42 grandchildren I can understand why there weren?t many Sunday dinners. There were & are Raynor family reunions on the 1st Sunday in August each year. (The California people have their reunion on the 1st Sunday in June)
Sarah Eva Raynor passed away 6 Nov 1942. Buried in Memory Cemetery, as are Vietta, Effa, Oakley, Neva & Audrey. Ida is buried at Bedford, Leafa at Cedar Rapids, IA., Fern at Marysville, CA & Parker at Fairport, MO
I used to take the train from Gravity to New Market on Friday evenings to visit with Grandmother. We could return on Saturday afternoon. 25 cents each way. One snowy day in 1936 I got to ride in the caboose of a freight train. Submitted by Mrs S Paulyne Kelley.
