- I found an article which mentions Cain Stafford by his birth name of "Canaan":
We are made to wonder if the original name of the deceased was not " Canaan." We recall that an early member of the Stafford family was Canaan Stafford, who was familiarly known as "Cain" Stafford.

One of the earliest Staffords of whom we have any knowledge was Canaan Stafford, the ancestor of quite a lot of our present-day citizsens in North Middle Tennessee.

He applied for Soldiers pension in April of 1871 when he was 84 years old.
