She was 21 years of age and lived in Lievin, France. Port of departure was Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France. She landed at Ellis Island June 20, 1913. The ship was the "France." Built by Chantiers de Penhoet, St. Nazaire, France, 1912. 23,666 gross tons; 713 (bp) feet long; 75 feet wide. Steam turbine engines, quadruple screw. Service speed 24 knots. 2,026 passengers (534 first class, 442 second class, 1,050 third class). Built for French Line, French flag, in 1912 and named France. Le Havre-New York service. Used in WW1; resumed trans-Atlantic service 1919-32. Scrapped at Dunkirk in 1934. 1930 US Census shows Emelie as the head of the household at 38 years of age and living in Witt, Montgomery County, Illinois. Her place of birth is listed as France. Living in the household with her, is her daughter Audree, 16 years of age, daughter Suzanne, 15 years of age and daughter Lucienne, 10 years of age. Liévin : The Liévin motto: " Un certain passé, un avenir certain " (A certain past and a definite future) Its history: The town has existed since at least 5,700 years. Until the middle of the 19th century, Liévin lived mainly from its agriculture. In 1857, four seams of coal were discovered, and this was the beginning of mining in the area. Between 1914 and 1918, the town was completely destroyed, including its three châteaux. Five mining disasters have taken place in Liévin; the worst of these, on 27th December 1974, claimed 42 lives. The same year marked the end of mining in Liévin. Other key figures in the town's history: The boxer Georges CARPENTIER born in LIEVIN (1894-1975). The film director Robert ENRICO born in LIEVIN in 1931. Not to be missed: "Mémoire de la Mine" (Memories of the mines): the pit heads of No. 1 (Mendès France square) and St-Amé (St-Amé district), as witnesses of the commune's past for young people. The national memorial "Hommage aux mineurs de la France" (A tribute to the miners of France) (Sainte Barbe roundabout) is the work of the Hungarian sculptor Ferenc Nagy.
