  Obituary: Peru — Richard H. Stafford, 76, of Peru and a winter resident of St. Petersburg, Fla. since 1987, died on Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Shands Jacksonville Hospice in Jacksonville, Fla. He was born on Aug. 23, 1923, in Peru. He attended Keeseville Central School and the Pratt Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering. Richard was the owner and president of Staffordshire Farms, Inc., a 600-acre dairy and crop farm in Peru, for over 45 years. He was a 32nd degree master Mason, a 55-year member of the AuSable River Lodge in Keeseville, a member of the Oriental Shrine in Troy and a 50-year member of the Community Church in Peru. His other affiliations are president and board member for 25 years of the Federal Land Bank & Farm Credit, a regional board member of the Key Bank Northern for 25 years and chairman of the State Committee, Agriculature Stabilization and Conservation Service under the U.S.D.A. for 11 years. He was also a charter board member of Apple Valley Senior Housing, the treasurer of the Clinton-Essex Holstein Club for 15 years and a four-year board member of the N.Y. Holstein Friesian Association. In addition, he was also a member of the corporation of the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for 10 years, a 20-year board member of Miner Institute, the town supervisor of Peru for four years, the president of the Clinton County Farm Bureau and the president of the board of directors of the Clinton County Extension Services. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Muriel; three sons, James Stafford of Houston, Texas, David Stafford of Rapid City, S.D. and Allan Stafford of Peru; two brothers, Carlos Stafford of Watertown and Avery Stafford of Syracuse; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Augustine’s Church in Peru on Sunday, July 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Community Church of Peru, Richard Stafford Memorial. The Lester E. Thew Funeral Home in Peru is in charge of local arrangements.
