- Email from Susan L. Smith:
There is an article in the Fayette County Heritage Book, p. 205, about THOMAS RICHARD STAFFORD, SR., including photo:
"Thomas Richard Stafford, Sr. married Martha J. Bradsher in 1844, in Person County, NC. Both were natives of NC, Thomas being born in 1821 and Martha, in 1823. Contemporary records of the 1800's reveal that Thomas signed his name as 'Thomas D. Stafford'. The death certificates of two of his children however represent his given names as that of
Thomas Richard.
. . .
"On July 15, 1863, Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army in Fayette County and served as a 3rd sergeant in Captain James L Garrison's Company B, 16th (Logwood's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. . . .
. . . T.D. Stafford's name was listed among the number of Confederate prisoners of war held at the Provost Marshal's Office, Memphis.
. . .
. . . his death in 1890. His wife, Martha, died in 1886. Both are buried at McCulley Cemetery near Oakland.
"The issue of Thomas and Martha Stafford were: Lauran; Elizabeth; Johnny Oliver (born 1852, married Mary E. Yancey in 1876); Thomas Richard, Jr. (1856-1927, married Katie Leon Boyd in 1879, died Shelby County, TN); Anna Richard (1856-1940, married John Pomfret Bailey in 1879, died Tipton County, TN). . . ."
The Great, Great Grandson of Thomas R. Stafford, Sr., Randall Thomas Bailey submitted the above info. for the book. As you can see, he was familiar with Johnny Oliver, Thomas Richard, Jr., and Anna Richard. But the oldest he has listed as Lauran and Elizabeth, which I believe is his interpretation of the census records.
(The "Lauran", I believe is "Susan". Elizabeth could be another daughter, but then what happened to Susan on the 1860 census. I think it more probable that Elizabeth and Susan are the same person. This remains to be proven.)
Apparently the baby Harriet on the 1860 census has died before the 1870 census. Loss of a child would "age" a person also.
Census:
- Page 253B, entry 300/300
Thomas D. Stafford, age 28, born in NC
Martha J. " age 28, born in NC
Lauran?or Susan age 4, born in Tenn.
(there's that problem with handwriting again --
I'm leaning toward "Susan" since Susan is Thomas' mother's name)
From a Fayette County Heritage Book in a piece about Thomas Richard Stafford, Sr., written by his great-great-grandson: "Thomas signed his name as 'Thomas D. Stafford'. The death certificates of two of his children however represent his given names as that of
Thomas Richard." (Perhaps the "D" stands for the more informal Dick, nickname for
Richard.)
- On the 1860 Fayette Co. census, page 525, entry 13
Thos. Stafford age 42, born in NC
Martha " age 35, born in NC
Elizabeth " age 12, F, born in Tenn.
Olivar " age 8, M, born in Tenn.
Richard T., Jr age 5, F, born in Tenn.
Harriet age 6/12, F, born in Tenn.
Richard age 5, M, born in Tenn.
(The census-taker was really confused here. The twins age 5 are Thomas Richard, JR., MALE, of course, and the other one, Anna Richard, FEMALE.)
- 1870 Fayette Co. census, page 343B (im. 10) entry 85/85
Stafford, T. D. 69 NC (
" Martha 67 " (nee Bradsher)
Note the ages are misstated.
- District 8. Listed as T. S. Stafford, a farmer, with wife. Parents born in NC.
On the 1880 Fayette Co., TN census, page 321C (image 11) Thomas & Martha's ages are back on track.
entry 39/44 Stafford, T. R. age 24 born Tenn.
" Katie age 18 wife
/45 Stafford, T. D. age 58 born NC
" Martha age 55 wife born NC
